What are some key features and advantages of THT vs. TTA?

Hydrogenated tolyltriazole (THT) is a tolyltriazole (TTA) derivative in which the double bonds in the benzene ring are saturated with hydrogen and converted to single bonds.  This makes the molecule and more hydrophobic and a higher performing corrosion inhibitor compared to TTA.

What are the most common applications of THT?

THT is used as a copper corrosion inhibitor in a wide number of applications including automotive fluids, industrial water treatment, and metalworking fluids and also provides protection and prevents staining of aluminum alloys.

How is THT used in water treatment processes?

THT is used as a high-performance corrosion inhibitor that can be fed directly into a water treatment process or contained in a formulated package.  THT is more resistant to oxidizing biocides when compared to traditional triazoles, so it is often used in demanding applications with high chlorine levels.

How is THT used in automotive and coolant applications?

THT is used as a multi-metal corrosion inhibitor in automotive applications, providing protection to copper as well as aluminum alloys.  THT is often used in combination with other azoles.

Does THT provide a longer form of protection compared to TTA?

THT reacts with metal surfaces and forms a film that is more hydrophobic and resistant to corrosive ions when compared to TTA, providing enhanced protection of the underlying metal.

What forms is THT available in?

THT is available as Wintrol® THT-T, a 90% active liquid in water; Wintrol® THT-50K, a 50% active potassium salt in water; Wintrol® THT-35PG, 35% active in propylene glycol, and in various Copper Bullet® high performance blends.
